Robert “Bob” C. Sammartino, Sr., 91 years old, passed away peacefully on October 19th with his loving family by his side. He was born on September 25th, 1934 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Lucy (Iacobone) and Rocco Sammartino. Robert was a man of all trades in the carpentry world from building houses to creating beautiful garden landscapes. He also led the URI RAMS to victory in 1955 as their head quarterback. Robert was the last surviving member of his siblings Louis Sammartino, Nicholas Sammartino and Edward Sammartino. He was the surviving spouse to his wife Eleanor (Gallo) Sammartino. Robert raised two loving sons, Robert Sammartino, Jr. of Cranston, RI and Anthony Sammartino of Scottsdale, AZ. He was blessed with four grandchildren, Robert Sammartino III, Alexander Sammartino, James Sammartino and Samantha Beam. He also had six great-grandchildren that spread joy in his heart and home.
Bob faithfully served our country during the Korean War while serving with the US Army.
Robert enjoyed his time with family and friends at the beach every weekend. He loved attending musical Wednesdays in Garden City while sipping on an awful awful ice cream treat from Newport Creamery. Robert especially loved his weekly Friday dinners with “the guys”. With his Italian heritage Robert was a true “foodie” that had a love for all types of food. One of his favorites was a Hot Weiner made by NY SYSTEM, he could never eat just one. Most of all he truly loved sitting in his favorite recliner at home watching every sports game that would air on television. Robert had lots of love for his family and especially his wife of sixty-six years, Eleanor. He would tell his family and friends how his wife was the most beautiful thing on two legs with her stone blue eyes and red hair. Robert was always surrounded by loved ones til the end of his long and special life.
His funeral will begin Friday, October 24 at 8:45am from the "WOODLAWN" Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Ave., Cranston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rocco's Church, Johnston, at 10am.
