Richard L. “Dick” D’Abate, Sr., 77, of Johnston, died unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on May 13, 2021. For 57 years, he was the beloved husband of Geraldine (Fusco) D’Abate. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Bond) D’Abate and former Senator William D’Abate.
Dick was a cherished son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law, uncle and friend. He was the former owner of Arrow Auto Sales in Providence and worked for many years in the auto industry before retiring in 2003. In addition to being a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, Dick participated annually in the Gingerbread Express at the William D’Abate School in remembrance of his father. He was greatly admired for his thoughtfulness, clever sense of humor, and social way. Even when meeting him for the first time, one could not help but feel like a lifelong friend. Most importantly, though, “Pop” was a deeply devoted family man. He treasured the time he spent surrounded by his loved ones. He will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, infectious smile, and eagerness to help others.
Besides his wife, he leaves his children: Richard D’Abate, Jr. and his fiancé, Donna Mazzulla; David D’Abate and his wife, Kim; Kevin D’Abate; and Julie (D’Abate) Calise and her husband, Jamie. He leaves five grandchildren: Joseph D’Abate, Daniel and Matthew Calise, and Kent and Tia D’Abate. He also leaves his sisters Ida Burke, Denise Orton, Bernice DeMarco and Davida D’Abate, and his brother John (Jack) D’Abate and wife Phyllis, and his sister-in-law, Marie Calvitto. He was predeceased by his brother William D’Abate, Jr. In addition, he leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Ave, Cranston, RI 02910 from 5:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at St. Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Ave, Providence, RI 02909. An internment will follow at St. Ann’s Cemetery in Cranston, RI.
