Maria (Cairo) Leone

Maria (Cairo) Leone, 90, of Block Island, passed away May 21, 2023 at the Westerly Hospital. She was the wife of the late Aldo Leone.

Born Jan. 6, 1933, in Caserta, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Carmine and Francesca (Viscardi) Cairo.

Maria and her late husband, Aldo, founded and operated Aldo’s Bakery in Old Harbor Block Island for many years and still is operated by members of her family.

She is survived by her children, Leone “Leo” Leone (the late Lori), Robert Leone (Lisa), Aldo Leone (Jill), John Leone (Kelly), Anna Papa (Stephen), and Rosamaria Jones (Mark); her sister Clementina Amato; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Leone, her brothers, Valentino and Vincenzo Cairo, her sister, Christina Vastano and two grandsons, Jason and Andrew Leone.

A Mass of Christian Burial will begin Tuesday, May 30, at 10:30am in St. Andrew’s Church, Block Island, with visitation being held in the church prior to Mass from 9:45am until 10:15am. Entombment will take place Wednesday, May 31, at 11am at the Our Risen Christ Garden Mausoleum at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
