Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John F. Murphy, former President and CEO of Northeastern National Bank, now PNC, and Helen (Devine) Murphy. John graduated from Scranton Central High School in 1955 and from the College of the Holy Cross in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He also attended the New York Institute of Finance.
Following college, John served in the United States Army Reserve from 1961 to 1966, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1970 and was formerly a member of the Petroleum Analysts of Boston and the Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR). He also served as past president of the Providence Society of Financial Analysts.
John spent 40 years with Bank of America and its predecessor banks as a Financial Analyst and Portfolio Manager, retiring in 2003 as a Vice President and Financial Advisor.
A devoted member of Immaculate Conception Church in Cranston, John served on the Parish Council, Building Committee, and Finance Committee, and was an active member of the St. Joseph Men’s Guild, where he served as both President and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Bishop’s Human Life Guild of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Louise (Bobay) Murphy.

Leavitt and her husband, Peter Leavitt; his five grandchildren, Michael Murphy, Christopher Murphy, Laura Murphy, Jacob Leavitt, and James Leavitt; and his sister, Pat Jordan.
