Eunice Adeline Stoskopf passed away peacefully at home on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 4, 1926, in Chicago to Rev. Albert and Gertrude Pollex on Easter Sunday.
She was the big sister to Judy, Ruth, and Paul. Eunice earned degrees in both music and education, graduated from the University of Toronto Conservatory of Music in 1945, and taught at Ontario Ladies College and at Valparaiso University. She was married to her beloved Donald W. C. Stoskopf for 76 years who predeceased her at 99 years of age. Together they raised six daughters—Carol, Christine, Catherine, Connie, Corinne, and Colette—who are still living across the United States. Eventually the family grew to include sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
When they moved to RI in 1965 for Donald’s job, Eunice continued her teaching career at Federal Hill House and Cranston Adult Education. Her passion was teaching young children and adults, inspiring many to pursue careers in early childhood education. In addition, Eunice was an accomplished and talented musician. She taught piano lessons at home, motivating many people to play the piano at any age. Throughout her life, Eunice and family were active members at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Providence. She enjoyed sharing her musical talents by singing in the choir and assisting the organist.
Eunice received her master’s degree from Goddard College in 1977 and began teaching in 1978 as Assistant Professor, CCRI Department of Educational and Social Services. Eunice was instrumental in developing the early childcare curriculum at CCRI. She taught early child caregivers throughout Rhode Island for over two decades. During her long teaching career, she won recognition and accolades for her many achievements. In 2001, Eunice received the Special Friend of RI’s Children Award for her dedication and significant contributions to the childcare communities. Students and peers held her in the highest regard throughout her career. She greeted all with a supportive smile and kind words.
Her retirement years focused on teaching piano at home to willing students on her Steinway, visiting family around the country, taking cruises, going to London and Paris, and attending church. She and Donald enjoyed their weekly trips to the ocean to sit on the bench at Point Judith, eating ice cream as the waves rolled in. Eunice was personable, had a beautiful smile, loved to shop, and was impeccably dressed. One could always find something to borrow from her “clothing bank.”
Eunice remained strong in her Lutheran faith throughout her 99 years, still playing her piano and singing her hymns until her passing. Now she joins her beloved Donald in heaven, to sing/play their favorite hymns with the angels.
A Celebration of Life is planned for June 7, 2025, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Elmwood Avenue in Providence, at 11am, with visitation at 10am.
Memorial donations can be made to The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod World Relief Human Care, PO Box 66061, St. Louis, MO 63166, or a charity of choice. In memory of Eunice, share a smile and kind words with someone today!
