Elizabeth Ann (Farrell) Tranghese, 90, also known as “Babe” and “Betty” of Cranston, RI passed away on December 17, 2024 surrounded by her children. She was the loving wife of the late Felix Thomas Tranghese.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Patrick Farrell and the late Elizabeth Hope (Emmel) Farrell.
Betty was the loving mother of four children, Thomas Tranghese and his wife Joanne; Paul Tranghese and his wife Cecilia; Patricia Bennett and her husband Michael; and Brian Tranghese. She was a grandmother to Faith (Tranghese) Williams and her husband Michael, Tina Tranghese, Stephen Tranghese and David Tranghese, and great grandmother to Ronan Williams.
Babe is preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Farrell, his wife Margaret “Peggy” and her sister Patricia Schissler. She is survived by her sisters; Marie Ziolkowski, and Jane McCarthy and her husband Gerald; and her brother-in-law Paul Schissler.
Betty graduated from Blessed Sacrament School and St. Xavier High School in Providence, RI. At eighteen years old, she performed with a synchronized swimming team at the Plantations Club in Providence to help raise money for the Cranston YMCA pool construction, where she later became a member for over 30 years.
Betty worked at New England Telephone before she married and raised her four children. Later in life, she pursued her undergraduate degree and graduated from URI.
She worked at the St. Ann Rectory, Tennis Rhode Island, the Rhode Island State Prison, RIARC, and for the Cranston Public Schools.
Betty volunteered at the Champlin Boy Scout Reservation, the Cranston YMCA, International House, St. Mary’s Feast Society, St. Elizabeth Home, and Save the Bay.
She was a member of the Cranston Senior Center. Betty was a communicant of the former St. Ann Church and presently St. George Church in Cranston.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with her family Friday, December 27, from 5pm until 7pm in the “WOODLAWN” Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Ave., Cranston. Her funeral will begin at 9am, Saturday, December 28, from the “WOODLAWN” Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. George Church, 1493 Cranston St., Cranston. Burial will follow at St. Ann Cemetery.
