Donald Stoskopf Obituary

Donald W.C. Stoskopf, of Cranston passed away peacefully with his family at his side on January 1, 2024, after having celebrated his 100th Christmas. He was born on October 21, 1924, in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, to Rev. Alfred and Frieda Stoskopf as baby brother to Betty and soon to be big brother to Ruth, Margery, Judith, and Rosemary. He spent his early years as a preacher’s kid in rural farm and dairy lands. He joined the Navy during World War II, learning the difficult task of maneuvering full power planes on short runways atop an aircraft carrier bouncing on the waves of a vast ocean. He earned his wings in June 1945. This love of flying stayed with him throughout his life.

After the war, Don attended Valparaiso University on the GI Bill, to get dual degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. There he met and married his soulmate Eunice Pollex, a music professor and fellow preacher’s kid; and they happily dined on split pea soup, listened to the Robert Shaw Chorale on red 45 rpm records, and started their family of six daughters – Carol, Christine, Catherine, Constance, Corinne, and Colette. Eventually the family grew to include son-in laws, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Don and Eunice enjoyed 75 years of marriage.

Don began his career at General Electric Company in manufacturing appliance parts and batteries in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Before Christmas in 1965, Don was transferred a thousand miles east to the GE Wiring Devices Plant in Providence, Rhode Island. He moved his family to Cranston where he remained with Eunice until his death.  The family quickly became a weekly addition to the congregation at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Providence, and the younger children joined the day school there. He became an active member of St. Paul’s Church throughout the years, serving many roles to honor his Heavenly Father.

Don’s 50-year career at General Electric entailed solving problems at several plants in Rhode Island as well as setting up manufacturing facilities in Mexico. He received several awards for manufacturing excellence from the company, the city, and his professional associations. His family can attest to the fact that he was a confirmed workaholic, even studying at night to obtain his MBA degree from Bryant College. He eventually retired at the age of 70, which seemed old to some, but he had another 30 years to go!

In retirement, he turned his time and attention to visiting his growing family and exploring other parts of the world. Even as Don and Eunice’s traveling days dwindled, they continued to welcome visitors to their home and the next-door guest house. Many times, family members came to play in the pool, picnic in the flower-filled yards, collect seashells from the beach at Galilee (where Don got special senior parking privileges), watch the surfers in the waves at Point Judith, and enjoy the Stoskopf hospitality. His favorite spot was sitting on a bench with Eunice, watching the ocean waves roll in, and eating their ice cream.

Don was a quiet and humble person, helping those who needed it but not bragging about his talents and deeds. He focused on being a good provider, and even though he could be grumpy at times, his intentions were to do the right thing. The world is a better place for him being here. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
