Arthur "Artie" Cabral Obituary

Arthur C. Cabral, 83, a beloved father and devoted husband, transitioned on Sunday September 17, 2023, at RI Veterans Home in Bristol, RI. He was the husband for almost 50 years of the late Catherine P. (Gallo) Cabral. Born in Fox Point, Providence, he was the son of the late Arthur and Fernanda (Cordeiro) Cabral.

“Artie” as he was called by friends, began to learn his craft as a jazz drummer at 9 years old. He started playing in clubs at 15 years of age and by the loving support of his father he was introduced to one of his idols, Duke Ellington at a back entrance to the Providence Biltmore Hotel in his mid-teens.

His music career included performances with Mike Renzi, Bob Peterutti, Dave McKenna, Art Pelosi, Rob McConnell’s big band, the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Dakota Staton and Sarah Vaughn amongst many others.

In 2014 he was inducted into the RI Heritage Hall of Fame and in 2017 the RI Music Hall of Fame. Anyone who knew him recognized his profound dedication to fight for and defend musicians for fair and equitable contractual representation while he earnestly served as president of the Providence Federation of musicians, AFM 198-457, for 20 years.

Besides his wife, he was a dearly loved and adored father of Anthony J. Cabral of Cohasset, MA and James A. Cabral of Los Angeles, CA; treasured brother of Richard Cabral of East Providence, Joanne Lentino of Warwick,  and the late Judith Cabral, John Cabral and Mary Costa.

Relatives and friends are invited to visitation Thursday, Sept. 21, from 4pm until 7pm in the “WOODLAWN” Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Ave., Cranston. Artie’s funeral service will be private.
