Arlene Louise Croce, 90, of Johnston passed away Monday December 16, 2024 at the Briarcliffe Manor. Born in Providence, daughter of the Late Michael D. and Louise N. (Pensa) Croce. Arlene was a dance critic for the New Yorker Magazine. She was the beloved sister of Marcia Ann Croce and the late Michael Stephen Croce. Loving aunt of Bradley Michael Croce and his wife Jennifer and Lisa Croce-Balinski and her husband Tom.
Arlene graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then earned a degree from Barnard College in 1955. From 1960 to 1978, she served as the senior editor of National Review. She was also a dance critic for The New Yorker from 1973 to 1998 and a dance panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts from 1977 to 1980. Arlene authored several books, including The Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Book (1972), Afterimages (1977), Going to the Dance (1982), Sight Lines (1987), and Writing in the Dark, Dancing in the New Yorker (2000). She was the recipient of numerous awards for her work in the arts.
Calling hours will be held from 8:30 - 10:15 AM Monday, December 23 at the “WOODLAWN” Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Ave., Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, Academy Ave., Providence. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
