Anthony D. "Tony" Russo, age 100, passed away peacefully into eternal life on May 17, 2026. Born on April 29, 1926, he lived a remarkable century marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and steadfast faith. Born and raised in Providence, Anthony was the beloved son of the late Giuseppe and Amelia (Ferrucci) Russo. He is predeceased by his adoring sisters Jennie Sclama, Susie DiMeo, Violet Izzo, Elizabeth Femino, and Mary Placella. His beloved wife of 76 years, Evelyn A. (Bonatati) Russo, predeceased him in 2024, and whom he missed daily.
Anthony’s devotion to Jesus Christ guided every aspect of his life and was evident in the kindness and compassion that he shared with all. He was generous with his belongings but more importantly with his time. He cared deeply about so many, taking the time to know and remember what mattered to each person, even when these conversations tested the patience of his loving wife. Anthony had a unique ability to make anyone laugh and smile and always had a joke ready for every situation. He was silly to a fault, but we all loved it. His warmth, humor, and generous spirit was on full display with the countless meals he prepared with his wife for anyone who came by. They were a pair that were always on the go, visiting everyone, family and friends, creating lots of laughter and great Italian food along the way.
A decorated World War II veteran, Anthony proudly served his country with honor and courage in the South Pacific during one of history’s defining moments. His sense of duty and patriotism remain a source of pride to his family. A true survivor of painful and difficult times, Anthony’s humor and friendliness served him well in coping with tragedy.
He was the beloved father of Joseph A. Russo, DMD, and Beverly R. Ouellet, Esq. He was also the cherished father-in-law of Mark C. Ouellet, Esq. He leaves behind two devoted grandchildren, Gregory M. Ouellet, MD (Jennifer) and Lauren O. Roussel, MD (Breton), as well as four adored great-grandchildren, Luke and Simon Ouellet, and Emilia and Ava Roussel. He was the adored uncle of many nieces and nephews and their families.
Anthony will be remembered for his enduring love of family, his distinguished military service, and deep faith along with his die-hard commitment to his New York Yankees- a love for the pinstripes that has been passed down through four generations.
Visitation will be held at "WOODLAWN" Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Ave., Cranston, on Thursday May 21 from 9am until 10am with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Apostles Church, Pippin Orchard Road, Cranston, at 11am. Military honors and burial to follow at St. Ann’s Cemetery.
