Anna Gountra

Anna Gountra, 96, passed away peacefully at Cherry Hill Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Friday July 24, 2026. Born in Siatista Kozani, Greece she was the daughter of the late Demetrius and Agnes Gountra.

Anna is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Roula and Gus Proyous. She was the proud and loving Yiayia of John Proyous, Ann DeGuilio, Marilyn Fernandes, and great-grandmother of Maximos, Iliana, Charlie, Aravela, and Katerina.

She is also survived by her brother Anastasios Gountra, nephews Dimitri and wife Tatiana, and Christo and wife Anna, along with many other great nieces and great nephews. She is also predeceased by her sister-in-law Ekaterini Gountra.

Anna was a devoted member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. She was a loving mother, Yiayia and great-grandmother. Immigrating to the United States via Australia in 1969, Anna was a talented seamstress, working at Anderson Little in Fall River and was the go-to for many women at church to hem Mother-of-the Bride/Groom dresses.

Known to many as Kiria Anna, she was a woman of strong faith and devotion to God and her Orthodox faith. One of her favorite pastimes was reading prayer books shipped from various monasteries in Greece on the lives of Saints and Miracles, most notably Saint Irini Chrisouvalantou, who is celebrated on July 28.

The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Cherry Hill Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their care over this past year.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 29, from 10-11 AM at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Cranston, Rhode Island. A Funeral Service will begin at 11AM. Burial will follow at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
