Angela "Angie" Maria Rucco, 95, of North Kingstown, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Kent Hospital. Born November 23, 1929, in Providence, she was the beloved daughter of the late Vito Domenic and Carmela (Mero) Rucco, and the cherished sister of the late Gloria Rucco Torres, Joseph V. Rucco, and Robert M. Rucco. She was also the sister-in-law of the late Dr. Geronimo Torres and Yolanda Rucco, and the aunt of the late David Mark Torres.
As an infant, Angela suffered a traumatic brain injury that left her developmentally disabled at a time when few services or supports existed for families. With love and concern, at age 5, her parents made the heartbreaking decision to entrust her care to the Ladd School, hoping to give her greater specialized care and safety that she needed. She resided there for 43 years. Once Ladd School closed its doors, Angela spent 12 years in Cranston at the Pastore campus.
Over the years, as opportunities for more personal and compassionate care became available, Angela transitioned to Nichols Lane and later to University Fields, a group home on the University of Rhode Island campus where she resided for another 30 years. Since 2019, she resided on Hatchery Road, a warm and inviting community-based home nestled in North Kingstown.
During her many years in state care, she was surrounded by extremely dedicated and loving nurses: Joann, Kathy, Alice, Mary, Diane, Rosanna, Laura, Louise, and Marsha as well as her CLAs: Claudette, Louise, Felicia, Abraham, Byron, Gina, Danielle, Emmanuel, Betty, Donna and Karen. The administrative team and social workers at BHDDH/RICAS, Marisa, Celestina, and Dr. Shelly Johnson were also dedicated advocates for Angela. Each in their own way gave Angela their devotion, kindness, and dignity every day. Her family will always be grateful for wonderful care she received.
Angela is survived by her nieces and nephews: Robert J. Rucco and his wife Debra, Joanne Marcari and her husband Steve, Elaine Colarusso and her husband John, and Joanne Torres Medici. She also leaves her great-nieces and nephews: Helena Medici, David and John Nicholas Colarusso, Christopher and Domenic Rucco, Tracy Belbin and Nicole Klumsprasert.
Even though her life’s journey was not an easy one, Angela’s amazing spirit and great strength touched and inspired all those who knew her. After many years, she is now at peace—reunited with her family in God’s loving embrace.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, October 31, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Garden Hills Drive, Cranston. Burial will follow at St. Ann Cemetery. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.
